Nutmeg is an essential ingredient to many baked goods as well as other recipes, and it is in fact healthy for you in the right quantities. But nutmeg is actually a hallucinogenic and contains the toxic substance myristicin. Even moderate amounts can cause hallucinations, and larger intakes can lead to convulsions, palpitations, nausea, dehydration and death. In fact even taking just 0.3 oz has been known to lead to seizures. And if you eat a whole nutmeg, you could enter “nutmeg psychosis,” overwhelming you with a sense of impending doom.
