Couples You Wouldn’t Believe Are Still Together

Andy Burnham & Marie-France van Heel | 22 Years

While the journey to various career paths began within the college walls, so did several unions. Andrew Murray Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, and his wife Marie-France Van Heel have been friends since college. They were both students at Cambridge.

There may have been no details about their romance, but it had to have been steamy because they married in 2000 and have remained together since. Their marriage has produced three children: a son and two daughters. His career has also thrived. Between 2017 and 2022, he was Mayor of Greater Manchester. Burnham was also a member of Parliament for Leigh between 2001 and 2017.

Lindsay Hoyle & Catherine Swindley | 29 Years

Sir Lindsay Hoyle is well-known for his work in the House of Commons. But the lovely Catherine Swindley has always been by his side, cheering him on. While there are no public details of this power couple’s romance, it is known that the couple married in 1993. Their union resulted in the birth of their daughter, Emma, who once worked in Hoyle’s constituency office.

At the time of their marriage, Hoyle was the Labor councilor for Adlington, a position that Swindley later took over in 1998. They have since collaborated to effect meaningful change. In 2020, Hoyle was named Chancellor of the University of Gibraltar.

Nicola Sturgeon & Peter Murrell | 12 Years

While Nicola Sturgeon and her husband, Peter Murrell, have been married for over a decade, they’ve known each other twice during that period. Their first meeting took place in 1988 when Sturgeon was a volunteer at the Banff and Buchan constituency at the time. As a result of the work done, she was able to attend an SNP youth camp organized by Murrell.

They became good friends over the years, but it wasn’t until 2003 that they began seeing each other. They settled down seven years later, in 2010, at Ran Mór in Glasgow. Sturgeon served as First Minister from 2014 to 2022.

Gordon Brown & Sarah Jane Brown | 22 Years

Few people outside of their friends and family know that Gordon Brown and Sarah Jane Brown met for the first time at a Conservative Party event hosted by Sarah’s public relations firm. They didn’t speak again until 1994, when they shared a flight from London to Scotland for a labor party conference.

They resumed their romance outside of the spotlight until 2000, when they married in a private ceremony in Fife, Scotland. They welcomed their daughter a year later and their son in 2003. Gordon has received numerous awards over the years, including the best of the best title in the Best Scot, Westminster Category in 2020.

John Major & Norma Major | 52 Years

While all relationships have their ups and downs, many have proven to be worthwhile. Former British Prime Minister John Major and his wife, Norma Major, have been together for over five decades. The couple tied the knot a few months after their first meeting at a conservative party meeting in 1970.

As far as beautiful stories go, John described marrying Norma as the best decision he ever made. With two children from their union, they have since guided and supported each other’s growth and career. John is still very involved in politics. In February 2022, he delivered a speech at the Institute for a Government think tank in London.
