Chris Patten went down in history for serving as the last Governor of Hong Kong, a role referring to the British Crown’s representative to the former dependent territory. In Parliament, he also served as the chair of the Conservative Party and the European Commissioner for External Relations.
Armed with a degree in history from Balliol College, Oxford, Patten joined the Conservative Party. The “Not Quite the Diplomat” author first held public office in 1979 after being elected as the Perth Member of Parliament. Beyond his public service, he is married to Lavender Thornton, and they share three children. Their daughter Alice Patten is an established actress.
