A Dog, a Vet, and an Ultrasound: How 12 Pups Helped Foster an Online Community of Animal Lovers
Pregnancy in humans and animals is such a unique experience. The excitement of discovering that you’ll be the parents or caretakers of a small, fragile being is unexplainable. So when Mariesa and Chris Hughes took their pregnant dog to the vet, all they wanted to know was whether she was healthy enough to carry the pregnancy to term.
But as the doc began the ultrasound, the image on the screen rendered them speechless. It was difficult for them to make sense of what they were seeing. Regardless, one thing was clear. They needed a solution to spare the dog’s life.
A Visit to the Animal Shelter

The Hughes were already happy caretakers of several rescue dogs when they decided to adopt one more. After all, what’s one more dog in a home taken over by a pack of canines? Their decision wasn’t motivated by personal gain. Instead, they were simply interested in opening their home to another helpless creature.
Once they agreed to it, it was only a short drive to the local shelter. Anyone who’s worked at a shelter would bear witness to the many animals that have either been maltreated or abandoned by their previous owners. So the Hughes had to brace themselves emotionally before walking into the building.
