Hollywood Celebrities Who Are Crazy Hobby Collectors

John Travolta – Planes

John Travolta may be recognized as an award-winning actor, but what most people might not know is that he’s a certified private pilot. He hones his skills by collecting aircraft, and he’s the proud owner of five of them.

He even modeled his Florida estate to function as his personal airport with hangars and two runways to boot. In fact, he parks a Boeing 707 that he owns at the front of his home while the backyard accommodates a private jet. Travolta has also been serving as a Qantas ambassador-at-large since 2002. He lent his piloting expertise to a philanthropic cause in 2010 by ferrying physicians and supplies when a devastating earthquake struck Haiti.

Brad Pitt – Metal Art

Paintings are popular collectible items amongst celebrities, and Brad Pitt has a decent selection. Pitt goes for metal art, in particular, including pieces of metal furniture and has even designed a couple himself. The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star undertook an apprenticeship with architect Frank Gehry, who designed wedding bands for him and his ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston.

He is so serious about his metal obsession that he turned up at a Switzerland gallery once and shelled out $1 million for Entappe by New Rauch, a painting of a rainbow-colored racetrack. Pitt also collaborated with Frank Pollarmo to create limited-edition furniture pieces.

Jerry Seinfeld – Superman

While Shaquille O’Neal has an obsession with the Superman logo, comedian Jerry Seinfield prefers the action figures. During a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session, he revealed that his Superman memorabilia includes a couple of ‘60s Curt Swan art. He also has a Kal-El model that’s being loaded into a rocket as well as Pa Kent.

He even found a way to incorporate his love for the superhero into his long-running eponymous series, with claims that every episode of the show referenced Superman in some way. Seinfeld is also known for his vehicle collection with an entire series as an ode to it dubbed “Comedians in Automobiles Getting Coffee”.

Angelina Jolie  – Daggers

As a pre-teen, Angelina Jolie’s mother bought her a dagger, and this started her fascination with knives. She had significant experience handling blades by the time she landed the Tomb Raider role. She also once showcased her knife-handling skills on a TV show.

Jolie admits that her fame helped expand her collection and has also revealed in 2008 that her son, Maddox, started following in her footsteps. She said that they took him (Maddox) to a special store and talked about samurais tabling the idea of the greater good in defending someone else. She also made it clear that all the daggers they bought for their then-seven-year-old were dulled.

Kelsey Grammer – Rare Publications

Kelsey Grammer is known for portraying intellectual characters in productions like the NBC sitcoms Frasier and Cheers. His real-life hobby isn’t far off from the characters he plays, as evidenced through his collections of rare first edition publications.

Grammer also penned down an autobiography released in 1995 titled So Far. Who knows? It might just end up being a valuable collectible item for someone in the years to come. Grammer isn’t the only celebrity afflicted with bibliomania, and other stars like Howard Stringer, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Charles Shyer and Whoopi Goldberg are known to have committed decent sums for out-of-print and hard-to-find publications.

Evan Mathis – Baseball Cards

Athletes are amongst the biggest sports fans, and Evan Mathis falls under this category. Despite being an NFL player, Mathis collects baseball cards. He’s very involved in the sports trading community, explaining that he finds the process of hunting, buying, trading, or selling the cards quite thrilling.

Mathis made an incredible $2.88 million from the sale of a Mickey Mantle card he had in his possession. He said that he planned to use the proceeds to get his hands on more sports memorabilia. Mathis has his eyes set on getting a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle Card with a PSA 10 value, which is estimated to cost an eye-watering $10 million.

Billy Crystal – Baseball Memorabilia

Billy Crystal is also another celebrity who is passionate about baseball, and he also collects sports memorabilia. Crystal extended his love for the sport to the small screen, and he produced/directed a production focusing on the New York Yankee’s ‘61 championship season for HBO.

After wrapping up production the HBO film 61*, Crystal donated the majority of the sports memorabilia and movie props. The items found a new home with an exclusive exhibit set up at the Baseball Hall of Fame. It coincided with the 49th anniversary of the record-setting 61 seasons set by Roger Maris.

Bryan Cranston – Baseball Memorabilia

Bryan Cranston made an impact on two popular shows, Breaking Bad and Malcolm In The Middle. Cranston played baseball as a student, and he’s a huge fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He assured his wife and daughter that he loved them more than baseball when accepting his third Primetime Emmy.

Cranston’s love for baseball was even more apparent when he marked his 40th birthday with an exclusive celebration at the Dodger Stadium. He’s also an avid sports memorabilia collector with an enviable collection of baseball cards. He displays his keepsakes in his game room at home.

He lent his piloting expertise to a philanthropic cause in 2010 by ferrying physicians and supplies when a devastating earthquake struck Haiti.

Kiefer Sutherland – Guitars

Before Kiefer Sutherland became a fixture in Hollywood, he has developed an obsession with guitars. The Designated Survivor star was able to assemble an impressive collection of vintage Gibson guitars. He explained that the look of the musical instruments is what compels him to buy them.

Sutherland explained that his love-affair with the musical instruments began when he was ten years old. He would visit the Toronto-based Steve’s Guitar Store and started buying them when he was 20 to lease them out to his musician friends. He shared that his collection grew to 100 guitars at one point, but he managed to let go of a few of them and now has about 35.

Quentin Tarantino – Pop-Culture-Themed Board Games

Before Nintendo, Playstation, as well as those addictive smartphone games, board games were all the rage. Most of us still have them locked up somewhere perhaps with missing pieces, but Quentin Tarantino treasures his collection of pop-culture-themed board games.

The Pulp Fiction filmmaker revealed on the Late Night Show that he doesn’t know exactly how many he has because he hasn’t kept count. He collects the ones that are TV or movie-themed and said that he needs to organize them because they are all over his house. Before that, Tarantino collected pop-culture-themed lunch boxes, but they became too expensive for him.

Norman Reedus – Breast Implants

Fans are known to send their favorite stars mail along with special keepsakes. Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead fame shared that he’s received two silicone breast implants, and it inspired him to start collecting them.

He received the first pair in 2013, and another fan—or perhaps the same one—sent him others again. He told Entertainment Weekly what he intended to do with the stash and joked that he would stack a huge pile and lay his head on them. He urged his fans to keep sending him the breast enhancement aids, but he was obviously just joking.

Dan Aykroyd happens to have worked as a reserve police commander at some point in his career. He ended up featuring in the supernatural crime-busting film Ghostbusters where he was part of the team tasked with apprehending lawbreakers of the invisible persuasion.

Turns out that he didn’t completely leave his law enforcement days behind; he actually collects badges. He shared on his Facebook account that he’s particularly fascinated with the ’50s Rose Gold Stars sported by the California Sheriffs. Aykroyd even occasionally rides shotgun in squad vehicles with detectives and holds a Payne City police force advisory commission.

Harry Connick Jr. – Cufflinks

American singer Harry Connick Jr. often steps out wearing suits from brands like Gucci. He developed this dapper sense of style back in New Orleans where he grew up. Connick also has a huge collection of cufflinks, but he said that he rarely wears them.

It started when his aunt from California sent him some that once belonged to his uncle. His wife, former Victoria’s Secrets model Jill Goodacre, also gave him a case full of cufflinks that he seldom uses. Maybe he’ll eventually get around to wearing a few pieces or he could pass them to his three daughters as part of their inheritance.
