Next time you drop a postcard in the UK, don’t be surprised if King Charles is staring back at you from the stamp. In April 2023, Royal Mail rolled out the first batch of stamps featuring the new monarch. Charles chose a clean, crown-free portrait to keep things simple, making him the first king in centuries to go bareheaded on postage.
His image now joins a royal lineup that started with Queen Victoria in 1840. As for those iconic red post boxes, the ones with Queen Elizabeth’s royal cypher are staying put, but any new boxes installed will proudly feature Charles’s initials instead.
