Why Denzel Washington Doesn’t Watch Movies Anymore

Denzel Washington, a two-time Academy Award winner with a career spanning decades, recently made a revelation that caught many off guard. The 70-year-old actor told A$AP Rocky and filmmaker Spike Lee for GQ that he doesn’t watch movies anymore.

I don’t watch movies, man. I just don’t,” Washington shared openly, sparking laughter from Rocky and Lee. He added, “I don’t go to the movies. I don’t watch them anymore.

When asked if his lack of interest comes from making so many films, Washington agreed, saying simply, “Probably. I’m tired of movies.

Lee then asked Washington how many films he had worked on. Without hesitation, the actor replied, “Too many.” After a moment, he said, “I think around 50.”

That remarkable number underlines Washington’s impact on Hollywood, from early classics to modern blockbusters. His extensive filmography remains influential, even if he no longer revisits his past work.

On-Screen and Off-Screen Connections

The conversation took a lighter turn when Rocky mentioned working with Washington’s son, John David, in Anthony Mandler’s 2018 drama “Monster.” Rocky surprised Washington by sharing how close the two had become.

You and John David are that close?” Washington asked with a laugh. Lee then joked to Rocky, “He doesn’t even see films, so don’t expect him to know.

Washington responded warmly, “I knew you were in the movie together, but I didn’t know you guys were that tight.

Long Partnership With Spike Lee

Washington and Lee’s partnership goes back more than three decades, starting with the 1990 drama Mo’ Better Blues. Their newest effort, the neo-noir thriller Highest 2 Lowest, reunites them on screen, with Washington starring opposite A$AP Rocky. The film is now in U.S. theaters and will soon be available on AppleTV+.

When Rocky asked about his favorite project with Lee, Washington dismissed the idea of picking one. “I don’t have favorites,” he said. “When people ask, I always tell them, my favorite movie is my next one.” He also admitted he hasn’t rewatched “Mo’ Better Blues” since its premiere.

Looking Forward, Not Back

Washington admits he never sits down to watch his films from beginning to end. His attention, he says, is better spent on what comes next. One of those upcoming projects is Netflix’s heist drama Here Comes the Flood, featuring him alongside an ensemble of English talent.

Unlike many actors who revisit their old work, Washington is candid about looking forward rather than back—a mindset that reflects his commitment to the craft of making, not rewatching.

With “Highest 2 Lowest” in theaters and “Here Comes the Flood” on the horizon, Washington continues shaping cinema in his own way.
